Equestrian statue of Charles I

If you've ever seen a sign reading "London - 87 miles", you've probably wondered which part of London that means. London's a big place (659 square miles, fact fans), so where, exactly, is the centre?

It's commonly held to be either Trafalgar Square, or Charing Cross. Well, in fact, it's both.

Republic of Texas was a short-lived nation in North America that existed for a decade between 1836 and 1846.

Sloane Square's river in a pipe

There are many underground stations in the world that run underneath rivers.

There are very few where you can see where the river flows over the platform in a pipe.

But that is just what happens at Sloane Square Underground station, where the River Westbourne is carried across the platform and tracks in a large iron pipe supported by girders.

Giro the Nazi Dog

Giro may be the only Nazi buried in London.

Leopold von Hoesch was appointed the German ambassador to London in 1932. He remained in that role after the Nazis came to power in 1933.

In February 1934, von Hoesch's beloved dog, Giro, died.
