Giro may be the only Nazi buried in London.

Leopold von Hoesch was appointed the German ambassador to London in 1932. He remained in that role after the Nazis came to power in 1933.

In February 1934, von Hoesch's beloved dog, Giro, died.

According to the Times, this followed "fatal connection with an exposed electricity wire".

Giro was buried in the front garden of 9 Carlton House Terrace, the site of the Nazi embassy to London. The inscription reads:

***

"Giro"

Ein treuer Begleiter

London im Februar 1934

Hoesch

***

"Ein treuer Begleiter" means "A true companion"

Hoesch increasingly came to oppose Hitler and died in 1936, to be replaced by Joachim von Ribbentrop.

Location

The gravestone is still visible underneath a London plane tree between the Duke of York Steps and a ramp that leads into a garage under 6-9 Carlton Terrace. It is behind a wrought-iron fence and is now protected from the elements with a glass-fronted kennel of its own.
